Why Malawi?
Located in South Central Africa, landlocked Malawi ranks among the world's least developed and poorest countries. The economy is predominately agricultural, with about 85% of the population living in rural areas. Malawi depends on substantial inflows of economic assistance from the IMF, the World Bank, and individual donor nations. Although the country has been approved for relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) program, the government faces many challenges, including developing a market economy, improving educational facilities, facing up to environmental problems, and dealing with the rapidly growing problem of HIV/AIDS. Poverty, diseases, such as Malaria and TB, and chronic malnutrition have combined with the AIDS pandemic to reduce the quality of life to the almost unbearable.
Consider these facts:
- Nearly one-third of the young adult population of Malawi is infected with the HIV virus
- Life expectancy for a child born today in Malawi is little more than 30 years
- In a total population of 11 million people nearly one million children are either orphaned or homeless
- More than 50% of the population of Malawi is under the age of 15
God has a future for the people of Malawi. It is not a future of despair, disease and hopelessness rather He wants these beautiful, gentle, warm-hearted people to be raised-up, prosper and become a Godly example of His provision in Africa.
