Why Malawi

Malawi in Africa

Situated in South Eastern Africa, the small country of Malawi is known as "The warm heart of Africa."  Despite the genuine warmth of these people, the majority live under the enormous multiple burdens of poverty and disease.  The health statistics of Malawi are some of the worlds worst:

  • Malawi has a national average HIV/AIDS infection rate over 14%
  • Of Malawi's 1 million orphans, 500,000 have lost one or both parents to AIDS
  • About 1 in 8 children will die before their fifth birthday
  • Malawi has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in Africa (807 deaths per 100,000 live births)
  • The under 5 mortality rate is 122 deaths per 1,000 live births
  • More then 46% of the children in Malawi are malnourished
